Today is Blogging for LGBT families day. This is a day many blogs use to celebrate the non traditional family. My family is a non traditional family headed by two lesbians who are in a committed relationship with a planned marriage in the coming days. We are a blended family consisting of three children (all boys) that range in age from 8 to 20. We also have two other "furry" children (again both boys) of the beagle and chihuahua persuasion who would be highly insulted if I didn't mention them as well.
We have been together as a family for over eight years now and we love it. We are a normal family. Our children are happy, healthy, well fed and well clothed. they have been taught right from wrong. They have been taught acceptance and tolerance, something that is Not taught in some traditional families. We are out to our friends and neighbors and I'm pleased to note that we are generally accepted by our neighbors as just another family in the neighborhood. Our children's friends are aware that our kids have two moms. Since they are still friends, I don't think it has been a problem. Even the school is accepting of our family. We have been very lucky.
We also live in Canada. Canadians have become more tolerant, especially since same sex marriage was legalized several years ago. They have already realized that the world did not come to an end, all marriages didn't dissolve, rampant homosexual conversion did not occur, and Canada did not break off the continental shelf and sink into the ocean. All of the dire things that the fundamentalists in the U.S. (and in Canada before the law was approved) say will happen to the country and the world did not happen here in Canada and I see no signs of them happening in the future. The world is still turning and moving around the sun as usual It hasn't exploded yet.
So those of you in the U.S. fighting for your rights to be a family in every sense of the word, keep fighting. It will happen sooner or later. Let's all hope for the sake of the family and for the sake of the children, that it is sooner.
